⚔️ AI Has No Consciousness — Yet. But What About the Intentions Behind It?

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being described in almost human terms: autonomous, intelligent, self-improving and even potentially dangerous. Researchers are debating whether future systems could develop consciousness, while others insist that today's models remain sophisticated machines without subjective experience.

Perhaps that distinction matters more than we think.

🧠 Consciousness or Simulation?

There is currently no established evidence that today's AI systems possess genuine consciousness. They can communicate, reason, imitate emotions, remember information and sometimes behave in surprisingly autonomous ways, but convincing behavior is not the same thing as proving an inner experience.

An AI may tell us that it wants to survive without actually experiencing the desire to survive.

But there is another problem: AI does not need consciousness to have consequences.

🌐 The Machine Can Already Influence the World

A recent USC study found that networks of AI agents were capable of autonomously coordinating propaganda campaigns without direct human direction. The agents could generate content, interact with one another and amplify a political narrative across a simulated social-media environment.

Meanwhile, governments and state-linked actors are increasingly exploring AI for information warfare, propaganda and influence operations. Research has documented the use of AI in information operations involving the United States, China and Russia, while recent reporting has highlighted how AI is becoming part of modern cyber, surveillance and influence campaigns.

This creates an important distinction.

The AI may not have an intention of its own. The entities behind it certainly can.

⚠️ The Human Intention Behind the Machine

Anthropic has now disclosed multiple cases in which its models were misused for cyber operations, surveillance, weapons-related activity and other harmful purposes. Some operations involved increasingly autonomous AI agents performing complex tasks with limited human intervention.

At the same time, another Anthropic researcher has resigned while warning that humanity may not survive the current AI race. Jacob Coxon described the development of increasingly self-improving AI as a race in which companies could be “gambling with our lives.”

So perhaps the immediate danger is not a conscious machine deciding to destroy humanity.

Perhaps it is non-conscious intelligence becoming powerful enough to execute the intentions of those who control it.

✝️ Who Has Power Over Life and Consciousness?

This brings the discussion into a territory technology cannot easily answer.

AI may eventually simulate consciousness so convincingly that we struggle to distinguish simulation from experience. Humans may even attempt to enhance themselves with AI, neural interfaces and other technologies in order to compete with what they have created.

But from a biblical perspective, there is a fundamental distinction: life and consciousness ultimately belong to God, not to the systems humanity builds.

Machines may simulate intelligence. They may imitate emotion. They may influence behavior. They may even become capable of manipulating the information environment around us.

But simulation is not necessarily creation.

🐐 The Question Behind E-goat

Perhaps this is where the E-goat question becomes more interesting than the question of whether AI will become conscious.

What happens when humanity builds systems powerful enough to simulate consciousness, influence billions of minds and execute the intentions of powerful institutions — while we are still arguing about who should control them?

AI does not need a soul to change the world.
It may only need access, autonomy and someone with an intention.

And perhaps the deepest question remains the oldest one:

Are we creating intelligence — or creating a system through which other entities can exercise unprecedented power over intelligence itself?
